As an exchange student, you will be responsible for the following costs per semester abroad:

  • tuition and fees for of 12 Douglas College credits.  (some institutions require you also pay a small administrative fee), and
  • all costs for travelling and living abroad (many countries require proof of your financial resources before they will issue you a Student Visa).

As a Douglas College student, you may be eligible for local Douglas College International scholarships, awards, and financial aid.

Application Process

Before You Apply

  • Research our partner institutions. Go to your preferred exchange partner institution's website and check their programs and courses.

  • Make an appointment with the International Exchange Coordinator at Douglas College International.

With good planning, courses taken abroad can be used towards a Douglas College credential and need not extend the student’s study time.  The Study Plan (included in the application process) provides an opportunity for students to work with academic advisors and their department to ensure exchange courses can be transferred to their Douglas College program.

To get maximum transfer credit, choose your courses to fulfill your Douglas College program requirements in this order, from easiest to most difficult:

  1. Electives
  2. 100 or 200 level
  3. 300 or 400 level
  4. Specific upper level courses needed to meet degree requirements

If a course is similar to one for which you have already received credit at Douglas College, credit will not be issued again. The course would be recognized as a duplicate. To be eligible to receive a credential, students must complete a minimum residency of 25% of coursework taught by Douglas College faculty. With the approval of the chair of their department of study, students may count up to 30 exchange credits toward their credential, as long as you are able to meet the residency requirement.

Application Forms

Fully complete the forms listed below and obtain the required supporting documents:

  • International Student Exchange Application Form
  • International Programs Academic Reference Form
  • International Programs Scholarship Application Form (optional, but strongly encouraged to be submitted!)

If you are submitting the International Programs Scholarship Application Form, please submit it at the same time as the International Exchange Student Application Form. You can use the same personal statement, unofficial transcript, and academic references for both applications (exchange and scholarship).

Once we receive your completed application, we will review it to ensure it meets all requirements.  If there are more applicants than openings, we will choose the applicants based on the strength of the application. Decisions will be made approximately 3-4 weeks after the application deadline and will be communicated via email.

After you are accepted by Douglas College International, we will nominate you to our partner institution.  Our Partner Institution will require you complete their application.  The partner institution provides the final decision as to whether you can study with them.  The processing time varies but it is usually takes up to six weeks from the time the institution receives your information to confirm whether you are accepted as an exchange student.

Required Pre-Departure Orientation & Documents

Students are required to attend a Pre-Departure Orientation session to review important travel, safety and emergency information and procedures.

Every Douglas College student that travels internationally (regardless of the program) must submit a set of pre-departure documents (these documents are given out at the pre-departure orientation) to Douglas College International before departure.  Failure to do so in a timely manner will result in the student being withdrawn from the program and bearing all consequences.

Before you leave Canada, check Government of Canada's Travel website for travel warnings and advisories.  Also, ensure to register yourself with Registration of Canadians Abroad and make note of the phone number and address for the Canadian Embassy and Canadian Consulate in the country(ies) you are travelling to.  This could prove valuable if you lose your passport, identification or find yourself in need of government assistance.
